Project Launch:

Santa Ines is a small rural community of about 300 people in Western El Salvador, close to the Guatemalan border. More than half (52%) of the community's population is under the age of 25, and they have very few opportunities to find formal employment. Many young people make the dangerous trek to the US in search of opportunity. The school in the community goes up to ninth grade and the students who graduate and do not emigrate to the US often fail to continue on and pursue high school.

This project aims to develop the computer literacy of the young people in Santa Ines by installing a computer lab at the local school. Through computer education, students will gain knowledge and skills that will prepare them to succeed in high school and will assist them with finding better employment. All teaching staff at the school will be trained in basic computer literacy and maintenance, while the school's director himself will be training as the lead computer instructor.

 

Project Upate

Eight computers were purchased and installed in the computer lab. The school was also awarded an additional grant from the Ministry of Education (MINED), which provided an additional 10 computers and 20 laptops, allowing the lab to be fully stocked. The teachers are currently receiving computer lessons, and will begin teaching the students once the lab is complete. Women from the community are making curtains and cloth covers for the computers to prevent against dust, and various parents have expressed their desire to receive computer lessons once the lab is officially opened.
