REVIVING THE ARTS: HIGUERITO ART CAMP
Year: 2010
Country: Dominican Republic
Project Status: Funded
Impact Sector: Education
Project Investment: $500.00
Project Launch:
Higuerito, Moca is small artisan town in the Dominican Republic and the region’s main form of income is ceramic pottery. The trade has been fading out over the last 15 years, with younger community members looking for other work in big cities. With a $500 grant from World Connect’s Kids to Kids Program, an Art Camp helped spur the interest of youth in art. The kids who participated spent their time making traditional art pieces like the “faceless doll” that is a popular souvenir sold in the community. Since the school doesn’t provide an art program, the project leaders took this opportunity for arts education to teach the kids why arts and creativity are important to a developing mind. The community is proud to see the children reaching back to their traditional roots and making artwork with historical significance. Some kids have begun selling their work to generate a small profit as well. The community was recognized by the government and a received a grant to fund two more art classes so the children can continue to developed their artistic skills. The camp was successful in catalyzing interest in the arts among the youth of this Dominican community and brought them closer to the artisan tradition that is an important part of their culture and history.Explore other Projects
