Hospital Juan Pablo Pina

Hospital Juan Pablo Pina (HJPP) is a large regional referral hospital, southwest of Santo Domingo and serves the greater San Cristobal area with a population of 220,000. This partner hospital attends an average of 6,000 deliveries every year, including all high‐risk pregnancies for the region.

Successes
In early 2008, we conducted an initial needs assessment and learned a great deal about the quality of services provided at Juan Pablo Pina. We identified critical needs in both maternal and neonatal care. We then established our team to lead the intervention within HJPP and were lucky to find two amazing champions of change to work with: Dr. Maria Ortiz, a pediatrician and Mayra Perez, a nurse. Before the end of 2008, we held 14 different training sessions on improved care for mothers and newborns, reaching over 177 participants including both doctors and nurses at HJPP with life‐saving technical skills.

In 2009, riding the successful delivery of equipment to our partner hospital in Bani the previous year, we partnered again with International Medical Equipment Collaborative (IMEC) to send two full shipping containers of equipment and supplies to HJPP. This delivery of an estimated $680,000 in goods has been put to use to improve the labor & delivery wards as well as make general improvements throughout the hospital. Furthermore, we continued training master trainers and staff throughout 2009, holding 11 additional sessions. Before the end of our intervention in 2009, we trained 40% of relevant doctors, nurses and staff – an impressive feat for a program in a major regional hospital for less than 2 years!

Future Plans
We are excited to see how improvements continue at HJPP under the local leadership. Key staff at HJPP have been trained as master trainers and will continue to improve clinical practices related to vital signs, labor & delivery, neonatal resuscitation and data collection and reporting.
