Improving Maternal, Newborn & Child Health in the Dominican Republic

Our strategy through Infante Sano has been to improve maternal, newborn and child health by partnering with existing hospitals and community clinics that have demonstrated need and an expressed commitment to improve the quality of healthcare they provide.

We do this by equipping them with the tools, training and resources they need to successfully save and improve the lives of mothers and their newborns. We work within existing infrastructure and collaborate closely with hospitals and clinics to improve maternal and neonatal services at the facility level. We train physicians, nurses and community health workers; provide appropriate equipment and facility upgrades; and improve hospital systems to promote quality, which will ultimately lead to a reduction of maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity. We utilize a train‐the‐trainer approach to support the development of on‐site master trainers. To foster sustainable changes where we work, we form quality improvement teams led by local champions to enhance local capacity.

In the Dominican Republic, Infante Sano operated programs in two health regions at four hospitals located in Baní, San Cristobal, Villa Fundacion and La Romana, with potential to impact over 11,000 births annually; and at two community clinics with 5,000 patient visits per year.
