In Muchiya, only 4% of adolescents complete secondary school, and girls drop out of school at higher rates than boys. In the context of COVID-19, women and girls are increasingly vulnerable to domestic and gender based violence, child marriage, and drug abuse. With this grant, the African Centre for Education Development will train 125 young women in fashion design, knotting, bag making, bed sheet making, and local catering. Additionally, the girls will learn basic literacy and numeracy, negotiation skills, communication, team building, leadership, business development and management. A selected numbers of the girls will receive start up tools and equipment to start their small business in the community. With these skills, the young women can establish their own income-generating businesses, building their financial power and reducing their risk to challenges young women face in this community.
