Project Launch:

In the rural community of Azacualpa in the department of Morazan, near the border of Honduras, a computer class in Canton Azacualpa and Municipio San Fernando Morazan, supported with a $489 grant from World Connect’s Kids to Kids Program, taught many ninth graders how to use computers and the Internet for the first time. Children come from houses with no computer, no Internet, and in some cases, no electricity at all. After the completion of the course, the kids displayed much stronger self-direction, self-confidence, and comfort with using the Internet. The community as a whole now is more appreciative of the utility of computers and the Internet and are asking for a second course so more kids can enroll and communicate outside of their community. A goal of this project was to prepare students for high school and their future careers. In an increasingly globalized world, it is essential that the workforce of the future be able to use the Internet. As the average salary in this region is $5 a day, very few students can afford to use the internet which costs $1 per hour at a local cyber cafe. Through these sessions, the students received their first training in becoming a part the workforce of the 21st century.
