Breakout the Books!
Year: 2011
Country: Morocco
Project Status: Funded
Impact Sector: Education
Project Investment: $482.00
Project Launch:
With a small box of books set out on a table, the youth center in Boumia, Morocco attracted girls and boys to read every day. With hardly any encouragement, some children raced to see who could read the most books in a week. Their enthusiasm led the center to partner with World Connect to create a fully functioning library, where students can now read, play chess, and productively spend their out of school time. Students who were initially dubious and critical about reading have changed their behavior. Boys who before only wanted to play soccer now compete amongst themselves about who has read the most books and which books are most challenging. The library provides a place for students of all levels to read in Arabic, French and English and encourages girls to participate in activities outside of the home and school.Explore other Projects
