Building Ngoli Day Secondary School

Year: 2016
Country: Zambia
Project Status: Funded
Impact Sector: Education
Project Investment: $9,984.62

Project Launch: 1-19-17

Ngoli Day Secondary School is found within the Kasama District of Northern Province, Zambia and is part of the Ngoli Catchment which consists of 51 villages with an estimated population of 15,978 people. Within this catchment there are no secondary schools. If students completed Grade 9 and wanted to continue their education, they would have to travel long distances to the next town to attend secondary school. This was not feasible due to the costs of travel and prohibitive school fees. Therefore, the community recommended that it work together to open a school and as a result, Ngoli Day Secondary School was officially opened on August 20, 2015. Despite this, there is  no building for learning to take place. Secondary school classes are held within the Ngoli Primary School, which only consists of 7 classrooms which is shared among Grades 1-10. This project seeks the construction of an autonomous secondary school campus so that Ngoli Day Secondary School possesses its own classrooms and administrative spaces.

Project Update: 6-7-17

The bricklayers have completed building the structure, plastered the classrooms, and are currently working on adding cement slabs to the floor. The roofers have repaired the roof. Local welders have completed the door and window frames and have affixed these to the building. Once the cementing of the floors is complete and doors with locks are fixed to the building, window panes will be added. The site of toilets was just decided and is anticipated to be completed by mid-June; for now, the community is digging pit latrines.

Final Report: 8-22-17

The community completed the school building which features 3 classrooms. In addition, 10 toileted latrines were erected. The new building features glass windows, bars for added security, and now has adequate room to host secondary school courses.
