Chicken Rearing to Fund GS Bare School Lunch Program

Year: 2017
Country: Rwanda
Project Status: Funded
Impact Sector: Education
Project Investment: $739.56

Project Launch: 7-26-17

Public schools in Rwanda have recently implemented a school lunch program. This program has enabled students to eat lunch at the school and avoid going home during the school day. However, lunch comes with its difficulties. At GS Bare School, 150 out of 472 students are unable to pay the necessary fees in order to fund this lunch program. Their parents are not able to support their children financially and fees go unpaid. In order to supplement the cost of the lunch program, the community has decided to install a chicken-rearing program for income generation. The chickens will be used to lay and sell eggs to create income for the school which will be used to pay the deficit for its lunch program.

Project Update: 11-13-17

As of November 12, 2017, the chicken house has been built on GS Bare's campus and 100 chickens have been purchased. The chickens are now about 3 months old. In about 2 months, the chickens will start laying eggs and the school will sell them. The school has purchased food and medication for the chickens and they have received their vaccinations.

Final Report: 9-17-18

The first step of the project was to build and outfit a chicken coop behind the school. After that was finished, the school purchased 100 young chicks. A quarter of the chicks died before they were fully grown. In March 2018, the chickens matured enough to start laying eggs. The eggs were sold at the local market and the profit was used to help feed the chickens. The plan had been to reinvest the profit in the project at the beginning by buying more chickens and then to use the profit to cover the school fees for the poorest students, but the school never made a profit as the chickens stopped laying eggs for still unknown reasons. The project will be re-initiated and the results gauged in another year.
