Project Launch:

A $500 grant from World Connect’s Kids to Kids program in 2009 outfitted a creative learning space and resource room in Guayabal in the Dominican Republic. The Centro Tecnológico Comunitario de Guayabal is a community center that provides basic computer classes, English classes, Internet, printing and typing services, and research assistance to the community of Guayabal and the neighboring communities of Yabanal, Laguna Prieta, Puñal, and Estancia Nueva. The Center was built in 2005 by the Despacho de la Primera Dama (First Lady’s Office) to encourage community development through technology. Although the Center has been offering these services for the past four years, it operated more like an Internet café and less like a multipurpose community organization. This grant helped transform the Center into an active community organization that meets the growing needs of the area. The space now provides a creative learning space with public access to reading and educational materials, teacher access to didactic materials that improves the quality of education provided to children at the Center, a children’s library and reading corner, resources for children to receive help with homework, and computers and educational software.
