Discovering in Preschool

Project Investment: $500.00

Project Launch:

Gulisi Primary School is the first bilingual nondenominational school in Belize. This school teaches English, but also teaches the Garifuna language and culture. Finding funding for basic learning materials is a challenge. Most of the learning is done through explanation, singing songs and use of the chalkboard. The children are expected to learn from what they are told, rather than what they experience. Neither the school nor the families can afford toys or materials to encourage artistic exploration and expression. In 2010, World Connect’s Kids to Kids Program awarded the school a $500 grant to purchase supplies that helped make learning fun. Many of the children in Belize come from living situations where survival is not taken for granted. Preschool is a place where children get a chance to play together, as well as learn how to take turns, display good sportsmanship and apply their imaginations in constructive ways. It allows for emotional, educational, social and physical development of the whole child and builds skills and confidence. Many of the preschoolers participating in this project have no toys at home and this program provided their only opportunity to participate in structured play. This project made a big difference in this very small community.
