Project Launch:

"What's Impossible" is a project designed to give youth of diverse socioeconomic backgrounds from San Jose La Fuente, a small and rural town in El Salvador's eastern department, La Union, an opportunity to learn about environmental conservation. With support from World Connect’s Kids to Kids Program in 2010, young people participated in a two day camping retreat in "El Parque Impossible", getting an opportunity to see a new side of their country, one not littered with mounds of trash. Activities focused on water conservation, recycling and learning about El Salvador's environmental diversity. With youth leaders and park guides as their educators, this experience provided participants with a new outlook -- children are now much more concerned with recycling and properly disposing of trash and they are eager to learn all they can about natural history in their area. Since the trip, the children who participated have been eagerly inquiring about a follow-up trip to another park where they can spend more time learning about the environment and bonding with each other. "What’s Impossible" was a unique project that provided a unique experience for youth living in rural El Salvador. The project was founded on the belief that when youth are allowed to be active learners, particularly in learning about preserving their environment and community development, they develop a deeper interest in their community's future, leading them to become more involved citizens in their community.
