El Salvador’s Buenos Aires and its neighboring casero, Las Pavas, live as one community- one church, one school. There are 344 residents, 109 families. Nearly half the community is under the age of 25. The major source of income is agriculture, primarily subsistence farming. Opportunities for young people are few. A $500 grant from World Connect’s Kids to Kids Program supported a series of educational excursions for the students in Pre-K through grade nine that were designed to inspire the kids and youth and expand their knowledge and vision of their future. For children in the primary grades, the destination was the Parque Zoological Nacional (the national zoo) and Tin Marin Museo de Los Ninos (the children’s museum), both of which are located in the capital, San Salvador. For the youth in seventh to ninth grades, two days of excursions were planned: a day-trip to Metapan for a tour of Instituto Nacional Benjamin Estrada Valiente, where high school is offered, a tour to a computer institute, and a visit to the Casa de la Cultura to learn more about regional history, vocational training opportunities, and the library.
