Leaders of the Future High School Internship Program in Kolda, Senegal

Year: 2016
Country: Senegal
Project Status: Funded
Impact Sector: Economic Opportunity
Project Investment: $1,052.66

Project Launch: 7-1-16

In Kolda, in one of Senegal’s poorest regions, there are no major universities and very limited employment opportunities for youth, disincentivizing students from thinking about their goals after high school. For the third year in a row, World Connect is helping implement an internship program at Kolda’s largest high school, to provide 14 students with a 6-week summer internship, exposing them to a professional work setting at various local development organizations and government offices. Through weekly reflections and mentorship sessions with local teachers and mentors, the students have opportunities to share and discuss their experiences and define their educational and career goals for the future.

Final Report: 9/30/2016

All 14 students have been ensconced at their new internships where they have been acquiring new professional skills and competencies. 13 of the 14 have completed training in financial literacy to better develop plans for saving and budgeting their earnings.
