Project Launch:

In 2005 there were over 1 million AIDS orphans in Kenya; in 2010 there were over 15 million AIDS orphans in all of Sub-Saharan Africa. In Nyanza, Kenya, HIV/AIDS has had a huge impact on the lives of millions. Widows and orphans who are infected or affected by HIV/AIDS are left vulnerable and without the economic stability to gain an education or have food security. Through this project, the community is planting a garden to grow nutritious food for members of the community and any surplus will be sold for income for the widows and children. An increase in income will provide nutritious food, school uniforms and fees, and economic stability for widows and orphaned children, increasing the likelihood of children staying in school and offering a better future for the community.

 

Project Update

The community garden is thriving with maize and vegetables (carrots, spinach, okra, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and cabbage), which are used to feed the community. The surplus produce is sold, allowing widows to generate an income. Using revenue from the garden, school uniforms were purchased for 45 orphans. In addition, a few community members have started their own home gardens.
