Peaking Pico

Year: 2011
Country: Dominican Republic
Project Status: Funded
Impact Sector: Environment
Project Investment: $500.00

Project Launch:

Los Guineos de Miches is a small, fishing community of approximately 250 residents, located on the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic. For generations, most families in the community have thrown trash in the streets or burned it. This is due to lack of education about proper trash management, and lack of trash cans in the community. Brigada Verde Los Guineos (BVLG) , an environmental youth group, aims to reduce littering by launching a large-scale educational campaign to promote practices that are healthier for humans and wildlife alike. Youth will participate in community clean up days, and will paint trashcans to help beautify the community and reduce the amount of littering

Project Update

Four trashcans have been painted and placed in different parts of the community. This has resulted in a marked improvement in trash management; Los Guineos's streets and ditches are much cleaner now than they were before the project's commencement. In addition, two large welcome signs with trash-themed messages have been created and will be placed along the main highway, at separate entrances to the community. The kids enjoyed painting the trash cans and the billboards, and are much more aware of the consequences of littering.
