Punta Rucia Library Project

Year: 2008
Country: Dominican Republic
Project Status: Funded
Impact Sector: Education
Project Investment: $500.00

Project Launch:

The $500 grant to purchase children’s books for the community library has already benefited 44 girls and 33 boys! The smiles and growing knowledge that is rapidly increasing in the library is exceptional. Punta Rusia is a very small and isolated community in the Dominican Republic with no newspapers, reference books, or fiction books available. Children rarely come in contact with books outside of required texts, and the nearest library is 22 kilometers away. The Library Project is a project to build a library to share the magic of literature with the town’s children. The initial money raised for this library are being used for construction costs, which leaves very little money to buy books. With this grant, the library would be able to serve its purpose and supply books to the surrounding community. These books will provide kids with an enjoyable pastime, help them improve their reading skills, or supplement their schoolwork. They may also be used for the weekend “Storytelling Hour”, run by motivated teenagers from the community.
