The community of Los Domínguez, located in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, is full of vibrant youth who love to be active but do not have many organized activities to get involved in. The “All Roads Lead to Green” project was very successful in incorporating environmental awareness into routine activities. As part of the project, a boy’s basketball league and a girl’s volleyball league were established and teams from both leagues took turns collaborating on mini-service project in the community that helped raise awareness about protecting the environment. The project also started a book club in the newly constructed community park. After reading the selected books, kids created art based on the environmental messages conveyed in the books. These artistic pieces -- drawings, songs, plays, murals -- expressed the creativity of the young people in the community while boosting community pride in the new park. This project taught the children a sense of community and teamwork and gave them confidence. The park walls are visible from the nearby elementary school and the beautiful and vibrant mural gives the local students a daily reminder to enjoy life and embrace their creativity. As a result of this project, Los Domínguez will have more civically engaged youth participating in positive activities that make the community a better place to live.
