Be Well in San Miguel

Year: 2015
Country: El Salvador
Project Status: Funded
Impact Sector: Health
Project Investment: $1,516.12

Project Launch:

San Miguel Ingenio is one of the largest towns in Metapán, El Salvador, but there are no women’s associations and limited opportunities for women to exercise, as nine of the town’s ten soccer teams are for men or boys only. This project will establish a wellness and exercise center where women can exercise individually in private, participate in group exercise classes, and learn about the positive effects of working out and eating well. The exercise and wellness center will be a non-judgmental space where women can gain self-confidence and focus on their health.

Project Update

The exercise center is stocked with equipment and has officially opened. Classes are held every afternoon at 3pm, with several women and young girls participating each day. The women's soccer team has also expressed interested in joining in on some exercises to add to their normal training. Due to high demand, the women have added classes in the morning. The community, including parents and husbands of the participating members, are very supportive of the center and have seen the boosts in self confidence it has sparked.
