Twelve-year old Yancy Elizabet Acosta had never played in an organized soccer game before so the night before the Kids Connect funded soccer tournament in her hometown of San Luis in El Salvador, she was too nervous to sleep. “But once I started playing and talking with my teammates and the girls on the other team,” she recalls,” I forgot everything and had a lot of fun.” Such is the magic of sports. The $500 Kids Connect grant provided real soccer equipment for the boys and girls teams, about 40 in all, plus day-long matches and events for children from neighboring communities as well. And it wasn’t just the kids who had all the fun. Take it from an expert like Miguel Antonio Sayes, 74: “It was great to see so many members of our community and nearby community come and spend the day relaxing, eating, and talking together. It is an event we had never had before in San Luis, one we even thought was too difficult to organize, but one that we are now excited to repeat."
