The Lake Junín National Reserve in Peru's Central Andes is under threat of biodiversity loss, resource depletion, and rapid human-induced eutrophication, where a body of water becomes enriched in dissolved nutrient that stimulate the growth of aquatic plant life, usually resulting in the depletion of dissolved oxygen. Among the most far-reaching and ecologically destructive situations is contamination from mining and flooding caused by the nearby hydroelectric dam. The city of Junín is home to approximately 12,000 residents rich in culture and tradition. Many speak the native Quechua language, dance the Chonguinada and enjoy s small community feeling.
