The youth of Restauracion in the Dominican Republic are often without reading, didactic, and creative materials and the community has an alarming number of youth and adults who are illiterate. Many young people drop out of school and are too ashamed to admit it was because they could not read. This serious need holds back illiterate youth are afraid to go out and look for work or continue studying. The town was at a disadvantage without books and with limited resources to improve literacy levels or supplement the learning materials given in school. A $495 grant from World Connect’s Kids to Kids Program supported the expansion of the local library and got more youth reading, poetry groups started, and made learning all-together more fun and enjoyable. The town believes it can reduce the amount of illiterate adults in our community if more are introduced to reading as children and youth.Explore other Projects
